A Guide to the 3 Premier Park Districts in Kankakee & Iroquois Counties

Whether you are looking to hit the ice, explore a children's museum, connect to nature or find a reliable after-school program, the park districts across Kankakee and Iroquois Counties offer diverse opportunities for recreation and community connection.

Here is a snapshot of the three key park districts serving our region and what you can expect from their 2026 programming.

1. Kankakee Valley Park District (KVPD)

Location: Kankakee, IL (Serving Kankakee and Aroma Townships)

The Kankakee Valley Park District is a regional powerhouse for athletics and large-scale recreation, managing over 600 acres and 33 parks. It is best known for its specialized facilities, including the Ice Valley Centre Ice Arena and the Splash Valley Aquatic Park.

  • 2026 Program Highlights:

    • 20 Years on the 20th: This February (2026), the district celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Ice Valley Centre. Look for special events like the "Olympic-style Trial Night" on February 20, where you can try hockey, figure skating, and curling.

    • New NFL Flag Football League: For the first time, KVPD is launching an official NFL Flag Football Youth League in 2026, offering a non-contact football option for young athletes. As of January 23, 2026, registration details are coming soon.

    • Nature & Wellness: The 2026 guide features the “Winter Explorers” for kids 7-12 February 10-12. "Busy Body Senior Club," and "Yoga in the Park" (returning seasonally).

Location: Bourbonnais, IL

Known for blending nature with education, the Bourbonnais Township Park District anchors the community with the scenic Perry Farm Park, featuring trails, farm animals, and the historic cavalier house. It also operates the Exploration Station, a beloved interactive children's museum.

  • 2026 Program Highlights:

    • Youth & Family: Youth Basketball League runs from January through March, emphasizing fundamentals in a non-competitive environment. Families can also enjoy "Toddler Tuesdays" and unique events like "Juice and Canvas" at the Exploration Station.

    • The 2026 Chicago Whites Sox Baseball Camp: For kids 5-12, this camp allows them learn from the pros! June 29 to July 2/

    • Health & Wellness: The district offers "Therapeutic Tai Chi" and "Family Yoga" sessions to promote wellness for all ages. Student 14 years and older can learn the “Chuck Norris System” March 2 to March 11. Fun fact The Martial Arts Academy in Bradley is the only authorized and affiliated school of Grandmaster Norris!

    • Nature Programs: BTPD has a dedicated Nature Program to keep people of all ages connected to nature. This includes a class on the wonderful world of Beekeepers and Pollinators February 16, Wildlife Wednesdays starting in March, and Explore Earth Day in April.

Location: Watseka, IL (Iroquois County)

Serving as the recreational hub for Iroquois County, the Watseka Park District focuses heavily on youth development and community support. Located centrally at 110 S. Second Street, the district provides essential services including childcare and active play programs.

  • Key Programming:

    • Youth Development: A cornerstone of the district is the After School Program, which provides K-5 students with enrichment and recreation until 5:00 PM on school days. They also operate the Learning Tree Daycare for younger children.

    • Seasonal Sports: The district organizes rotating seasonal sports, including youth soccer leagues in July, pickleball, and 3-on-3 basketball. Archery programs have also been a staple for kids aged 8–14 in the spring months.

Nature Programs: The Spring Equinox Home School is a celebration of Earth’s day of balance for kids 7-13 on March 20.
