Which chicken are you choosing?

This summer we had the opportunity to visit Songbird Hill Farm, a family owned and operated poultry farm in Kankakee, to see for ourselves the incredible difference pasture-raising makes for a chicken's health and wellbeing. Owners Jeff and Paige, along with their two adorable boys, a farm cat and a kitten, greeted us with the warmest welcome and gave us a tour of their farm. They showed us where they keep their chickens and walked us through their daily chores and processes. They explained the process of daily rotational grazing and how the daily shelter moves not only benefit the chickens by providing fresh pasture to supplement their diets with "super foods" like worms, bugs, and an array of diverse plants, but also supports healthy soil and a self-sustaining cycle of nourishment for the land and the chickens.

At Songbird Hill farm their values for a local, sustainable, and connected food supply are strongly rooted through everything they do and this was easy for us to see. From the quality non-GMO feed, fresh water, and lush greenery, to the bright, airy pens with plenty of space for the chickens to frolic and be free, it is no wonder why they have the happiest and best tasting chicken around.

On our way out, we stopped by their on-site shop and picked up fresh eggs, a couple cute t-shirts, and some drumsticks for dinner. Their hospitality and professionalism was unmatched. And what a delicious dinner it was!
