Tulip Trees
Perry Farm is a well-known and loved park in Kankakee County. People visit to enjoy nature as they stroll (or roll) the trails, through a variety of prairie flora, forests and riverside paths, and Indian caves. Perry farm is full of natural beauty and is also home to many different types of trees. One of these trees that often goes unnoticed is the Tulip Tree.

Tulip trees, scientifically known as Liriodendron tulipifera, are large deciduous trees native to North America. They are most commonly found in the Eastern US, often growing alongside other trees like oaks, maples, and hickories. They can grow quite tall, reaching over 100 feet and are renowned for their stunning flowers and unique leaf shape.
Tulip trees are not only captivating to look at, they are also an important piece of the ecology in Kankakee. Their beautiful yellow-green flowers are large and tulip-shaped. Typically blooming in late spring and early summer they are quite the attraction for local pollinators. Their uniquely shaped leaves, resembling a tulip as well, are bright green in the spring and summer, and turn a striking yellow in the fall. Both their leaves and bark provide a habitat and food for a variety of wildlife, including a wide array of caterpillars and birds.
Next time you find yourself out enjoying the natural beauty of Perry Farm, look up and around, you just may spot the Tulip Tree!
